So my laptop (17z-ca300) got knocked over a few months ago and the upper right portion of my keyboard/palmrest broke. Because it can't stand up, it's now slowly chipping away at other parts of the keyboard, and I need to fix it both before it gets worse and before it starts affecting other parts.

I see replacements on eBay, but they all say they need a certain kind of touchpad (73H0) to be compatible. Is there a way to find out what kind of touchpad I have without disassembling the laptop? Or can I buy whichever keyboard/palmrest fits and have my current, working touchpad put into the housing?

Hi @hirotka,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

To find out the model of your touchpad on an HP laptop without disassembling it, you can try several software-based methods. Here are the steps.

Check Device Manager:

  1. Right-click on the Start menu and select Device Manager.
  2. Expand the Mice and other pointing devices section.
  3. Right-click on the touchpad device (often listed as Synaptics, Elan, or HID-compliant mouse) and select Properties.
  4. Go to the Details tab.
  5. In the Property drop-down menu, select Hardware Ids.
  6. Note down the hardware IDs listed. You can search these IDs online to find the exact model of your touchpad.

Use System Information Tool:

  1. Press Windows + R, type msinfo32, and press Enter.
  2. In the System Information window, expand Components and then click on Input.
  3. Look for details related to the touchpad. This may not always provide a model number, but it can give you clues about the manufacturer and model.

HP Support Assistant:

  1. Open the HP Support Assistant application on your laptop.
  2. Navigate to the My devices tab and select your laptop.
  3. Check for detailed information about the hardware components of your laptop. This tool often provides comprehensive details including touchpad specifications.

HP Website:

  1. Visit the HP Support website.
  2. Enter your laptop's serial number or model number.
  3. Look for the Product Information or Specifications section which might list the touchpad model.

System BIOS/UEFI:

  1. Restart your laptop and enter the BIOS/UEFI setup by pressing Esc, F2, F10, or Del during startup (the key depends on your HP model).
  2. Navigate to the System Information section.
  3. Look for information about the touchpad. Some BIOS/UEFI setups include detailed hardware information.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
