HP dv7t
Microsoft Windows 7 (64-bit)

I have an old laptop that I purchased back in April 2011. The fan stopped working and it doesn't boot up. I want to replace it but when I googled dv7t fan, it gave me a bunch of different ones like fans for the dv7t-7000, dv7t-6100, dv7t-6c00, etc. How do I find out exactly which model laptop I have?

Hi:

Here is the link to the service manual for your notebook's model series...

Hi:

Enter the product number of your notebook in the box at the link below, and you should get a specific parts list for your model.

http://partsurfer.hp.com/search.aspx

The product number can normally be found on the same label as the serial number.

I don't see a product number. I see a sticker on the bottom that only shows the Windows license information.

If you can't find the label with the serial number on it (it may be under the battery), go into the BIOS and the product number should be listed on the system information screen.

The issue is I can't boot up. It gives me a message that the fan can't be found or something, it reaches the Windows login, and shuts down because it overheats.

Then there is no way to find out unless you can find the label with the serial number on it.

If you can find the serial number you can also try to enter that in the parts surfer website to get the model number.

There's no way to tell by when it was purchased? I was hoping some model numbers were sold during a specific time period. I know when I ordered it (have my receipt) but I can't reach an agent at HP who can tell me.

Can you remember what model processor it has, such as an Intel core i7-3520, and what graphics it has?

Did it come with W7 or W8?  That would narrow it down.

For example:  The dv7-7000 model series goes from 7000-7399.  That's at least a possible 400 models with a 3rd gen Intel core processor.  The dv7-7000's came with W7, but the 7200's and newer came with W8.

I can't think of any way, anyone is going to be able to help you without at least a product number or serial number, or you can tell exactly what processor, graphics and operating system it came with.

That way, at least I can get you the service manual to order the right fan.

Sorry I'm an idiot. I just noticed the model number in that same email. Don't know how I didn't before. I apologize for wasting your time, and I appreciate you helping out. Thank you
