How do I get the Realtek RTL8723 wireless adapter to receive at 5.0 Ghz. I know that the adapter is 802.11b/c/n and that it should support receiving the data at 5.0 Ghz. It currently receives only at 2.4 Ghz in the b or c standard. My router supports the n standard and 2.4 or 5 Ghz operation.

Hi:
That model wifi adapter is a single band (2.4 GHz) wifi adapter with Bluetooth.
It cannot connect to the 5.0 GHz wifi band.
You have two options...
The easy one would be to purchase an external USB dual band wifi adapter and use the Realtek card for Bluetooth only.
The other one would be to replace the internal RTL8723 card with this one...
Realtek RTL8821CE 802.11 ac 1x1 WiFi + Bluetooth 4.2 Combo Adapter (MU-MIMO supported) HP part # L17365-005.
This card works with only one antenna.
The only place I have been able to find this model is on eBay.

Below is the link to the service manual where you can find the wifi card removal and replacement procedure...
