I have just tried charging the HP Stylus pen which came with the laptop, how do I know if it is charging as I can't see any lights? I thought it had been charging for an hour but stylus doen't seem to be working.

What is the product number or complete product name of your notebook?
You have identified it as falling in a series of notebook that is somewhat diverse and covers many notebooks ranges from entry-level to premium level.
I have a product loan Spectre x360 -15-ch000 notebook for the 2018 model year series that was delivered with an active stylus.
The stylus requires a single aaaa battery. It has lasted for seven months.
