Hello,
I am a college student looking to buy a laptop but since I am on a budget, I need the laptop to last me a LONG time. I understand the warranty is for 1 year on most PC manufacturer's website, but how long does HP actually service and manufacture parts for?
1. What is the support lifespan of most HP laptops?
2. Is this time frame from the date it is purchased or from when first manufactured at the warehouse?
Example. If i buy a new laptop from HP's website, but the laptop has been out for 9 months, will HP Support it for another 4 years? 5 Years?
Anything in writing would be helpful

What do you mean by "support"? Parts are manufactured while the laptop is in production run. Any repair parts are extras created during that production run. They will be held for warranty repair and some will go to the Parts Store and Partsurfer for retail sale to the public. HP will stock the Parts on Partsurfer and the Parts Store for maybe 2 years after the laptop is no longer being produced.
After the warranty is up, HP can fix out of warranty machines but this is a very expensive way to have it repaired. After the warranty you want to think in terms of fixing it yourself or having a local technician do it. Most repair parts are industry standard, i.e hard drives memory modules, screens. The things that are completely proprietary would be things like circuit boards, i.e motherboard, power switch board, usb boards, and chassis parts like top covers. Some third parties actually make replacement parts, certainly batteries and power supplies but also lower tech things like keyboards are made by non-HP suppliers. There are also entrepenurs who buy new HP laptops and strip them down into component parts, catalogue and warehouse them and offer the individual parts for sale. A $500 laptop can bring thousands of dollars parted out that way, over several years. There are also end of service life units sold as parts donors on sites like eBay which are good sources of repair parts if you know what to look for.
Anyway, rest assured if your laptop needs repairs within a normal 5 to 7 year service life, the parts will be available out there. At a minimum, HPs policies are very similar to other laptop makers so if future availability of parts and service concerns you there is no better laptop maker you can turn to. Lenovo, Acer, etc. will have very similar policies on service and replacement parts. Also, the Forum is always here to help. We can help you identify and locate repair and upgrade parts and provide advice on where to get the parts and have it serviced at the best price. It's what we do here and no other support channel can do it as well as the volunteers at the Forum even if I do say so myself.
