This has an i5 gen8.
It's brand new so there is not much of anything on it. It has McAfee antivirus running.
MS helped on the phone and chat app to check my settings etc. after the latest win10 1709 updates.
It takes about 2.5 minutes to get to the password screen.
Is this normal or slow?

Hello,
Your CPU is 8250U. the 'U' means it uses less power and as such, has less performance compared to most CPUs used in desktops.
A computer is only as strong as its weakest component. In your case, this would be the 5400 RPM HDD.
Short answer: yes, this is normal.
My laptop is from 2008 and also has a 5400 RPM HDD, boot time is anywhere between 1 and 3 minutes. This also depends if your BIOS and drivers are all up to date.

Hello travistee,
AlexandruN did not "guess" in any way.
Just because a mobile processor has 8 logical cores doesn't mean that the computer is going to be fast. There are Intel Atom processors with 8 logical cores - are they fast? No, not at all.
A 5400RPM hard drive is not meant to provide fast system booting. 5400RPM drives are the budget of the budget hard drives and are mainly used for file/external storage. I am honestly not surprised that the hard drive is causing sluggish reboots.
If a system is slow in its boot process, the root issue is the type of drive. I would also like to kindly remind you that Fast startups do not affect restarts, therefore, a restart will take longer than an ordinary shutdown + turn on.
Regards,
Eddy

The question should be how long should it take for a restart or a cold startup.
I was looking for an answer from someone who has a similiar computer and could give me a comparison to theirs.
It was startilng faster before MS made some changes using their remote access chat etc, after the win10 1709 update.
The disk didn't change, so something else is different.
So, I'm looking for someone who has a similiar system with the latest win10 update to do a quick test and time it so I can compare.
ps
I think I read that the 8gen cpus are 40% faster than the 7gen.
