A successful path to upgrade would be to install two guaranteed compatible memory modules in the soDIMM slots.

 

Just adding one can make it a bit dicey.

 

You would be adding the chance of only having one module recognized by the OS and BIOS.

 

Here is a source for guaranteed compatible memory modules.

It means that there is only one 4GB soDIMM module installed. It is single rank with four 1 GB chips.
