Hi, @LevaLev

If you want to run the report that tells you how much memory your notebook can support, here's how:

1. In the search box, search for cmd and click Run as administrator.

This will open the command prompt.

2. Once command prompt is opened, type wmic memphysical get maxcapacityEx and hit enter.

There, it will show the maximum RAM capacity your PC's motherboard can support.

The capacity is shown as Kilobytes, so you have to convert it to Gigabytes by dividing the number provided in the report by 1,048,576.

Hello @LevaLev , how are you ?

Here below is the line manual for this model.

And it actually supports a maximum of 16GB. Information is on page 2

That's what I saw, but on websites such as Crucial and others it says 64gb, is that just a mistake?

Also would this RAM fit: 2 of these

Thanks for the reply.

Another question, would it be better to get a single 32gb stick or 2 16gb. The single is £20 cheaper but will it be less efficient?

HP Recommended

You're very welcome.

What I was looking for were some actual discussions where someone actually installed 64 GB of memory in their 15-eg0xxx notebook and all I could find are several discussions such as the one I posted where most folks provided the Crucial memory report indicating 2 x 32 GB was supported marked as solved, and no follow up comments where someone reported back, yes, 64 GB of memory worked.

The only discussion I could find where someone installed 64 GB of memory in their 15-eg0xxx notebook was this person who reported it didn't work, but he installed the wrong type of memory.

If you plan on upgrading the memory in the future, buy the 32 GB chip.

If not, buy 2 x 16 GB because it will run in the higher performing dual channel mode.

Mismatched memory or one memory chip and one empty slot will run in the lower performing single channel mode.

I have decided on this RAM: 2x8gb

Would this be compatible?

Also as this is my first time upgrading my laptop, can you send any helpful guides or ways to prevent common errors. If this laptop breaks I cannot get a new one, so I absolutely cannot risk that happening

HP Recommended

If your notebook already has an 8 GB memory chip, you should only need to install a second one in the empty slot and the Crucial memory you selected would be what I would use.

Here's a service teardown video and the service manual:

Thank you, I believe I have 2 4gbs as that's the default.

I've heard a lot about electrostatic damage, how do I prevent this and would antiseptic gloves do the trick?

HP Recommended

Gotcha.

So, you will need 2 x 8 GB if you only want to go to 16 GB.

Unfortunately, I would not be able to help you with the antistatic question.

I have taken apart PC's and notebooks for 20 years now and never used any precautions to prevent sparking other than some commonsense knowledge like unplugging the PC pressing the power button to drain any residual power, and in a notebook, unplugging if from the charger and removing the battery, and if I have been moving around in a carpeted area, to always touch something metal before touching the PC to make sure I had not built up any static electricity--especially when the humidity is low.

I'm sure there are plenty of sources you can google to find out the information you are looking for or start a new discussion.
