If it's using 80% of your CPU, it's likely that Windows Defender is running a full system scan or stuck in a loop. This process, part of Microsoft Defender, is essential for real-time protection however, such high CPU usage can seriously impact performance.

To reduce or disable it, you can temporarily turn off real-time protection:

  1. Go to Windows Security > Virus & threat protection > Manage settings.
  2. Turn off Real-time protection.

This will instantly lower CPU usage, but it also disables active protection; so only do this if you're not connected to the internet or have another antivirus running.

For a more permanent solution, consider using the Group Policy Editor:

  1. Press Win + R, type gpedit.msc, and hit Enter.
  2. Navigate to Administrative Templates > Windows Components > Microsoft Defender Antivirus.
  3. Double-click Turn off Microsoft Defender Antivirus and set it to Enabled.
