1 year old laptop plagued by slow boots & slower performance. Notorious 100% disk usage error seems to be the culprit. Tried every fix I could find online (like disabling various services); a windows reset improved the situation, but after the very next compulsory windows update, the 100% disk usage & slow performance was back. General consensus online seems to be that an SSD upgrade is the only real solution to this, as the issue seems to be because mechanical HDDs just can't seem to handle how heavy of an OS windows 10 is, especially since it's 20H2 update (problem still persists with 21H1). Kindly provide link to service manual if available.

Hi,
You can install an M2 PCIe NVMe SSD from your preferred brand and capacity.
It will give a great boost to the everyday performance of the machine.
Ex

On page 47 of service manual you can see the steps to install the drive
http://h10032.www1.hp.com/ctg/Manual/c06691790.pdf
I would also install at least an extra 4GB module of DDR4 2400MHz in the empty slot. (max 32GB)
I would remove the old HDD and not leave it in the machine.
Hope it helps,
David

Thank you for the reply. I think I've gotten what I need.
But though I was going to remove the old drive anyway before clean installing Windows on the new ssd, I was thinking of formatting/wiping every partition on it except the one I used to have data on, and then put it back in as simply a storage drive.
Is there any reason why I can't do that? After all, when I bought this laptop last year, I paid for the hard drive inside it too right? So it would be a shame to let it go to waste.

You're welcome.
Yes, you could leave the old drive in there and use as storage.
I usually on my personal PCs remove the mechanical drive (especially if I think it might have a problem) as it can still slow down the system, but yes it should not be a problem leaving it in the machine.
Take care,
David
