HP Recommended

A family member gave me her old 2014/15 HP Chromebook because it started displaying a "chrome os is missing or damaged" error and she couldn't fix it. If I can she said I can just have it so I'd like to try. I don't have a lot of money right now and could really use it. The problem is when I go the recovery tool the Chromebook told me to go to the model isn't listed anywhere to download the recovery file to the USB. Is there is some other way I can do this without using the recovery tool? How do I know which chrome OS I need to download?
