Hi,

I have a Pavilion HP laptop:

HP Pavilion - 15-cs3153cl

Product

1G131UA

Serial

[personal information removed]

That the SSD failed on it. I followed the directions to create a USB boot flash. Since the SSD has failed and I am out of Warranty, I cannot get help. How do I recover the Windows 10  key that came with the laptop so  I can reinstall Windows on a new SSD?

Hi:

You have a couple of options.

First of all, the Windows product key is stored/encrypted in your notebook's BIOS, so if the drive fails you can reinstall Windows without the need of a product key.

If you used the Micrsoft tool to create a bootable W10 installation flash drive, that is one way to reinstall Windows.

The other way is to use the HP Cloud recovery tool.

The HP image will have all of the necessary drivers included.

Here is an info link for how to use the utility.

HP Consumer PCs - Using the HP Cloud Recovery Tool in Windows 11 and 10 | HP® Customer Support

You can download the software from the Microsoft Store.

HP Cloud Recovery Tool - Microsoft Store Apps

Since you will have to use the utility on another PC, you will need to enter the PC's product number in the tool's search window in order to proceed to make the recovery media.

Your PC's product number is 1G131UA#ABA

Hi,

Thanks for the information. I downloaded HP Cloud Recovery Tool Installer.exe from MSFT site. when I try to run the .exe, I right click and select "run as admin". I have only one user on this laptop and it has admin priv. However, after I select "OK" to allow it to run, it comes back and it says I need admin priv. to run the .exe. Is there a trick to this utility?

You're very welcome.

I've never come across that problem before.

I downloaded the file

Double clicked to install the program on the PC.

Then I right click on the program and select run as administrator.

I have tried three PC and none of them allow me to run the application it takes me to the MSFT store and I log in and then it says my windows updater is disabled. I just want to download the utility. Is there an ftp site that I can go to download the application?  the HP Cloud Recovery Tool Installer seems to be too intrusive for any PC to run on. It is trying to update the PC I am trying to download the tool so I can repair my dead SSD HP laptop. I don't want to update that PC, it is jsut a way for me to get online to get the tool.

Here is where I go to download the installer: https://apps.microsoft.com/detail/9mtks9pr7r3n?rtc=1&hl=en-us&gl=us

Is this correct?

Can you place it some where?

I have zipped up and attached an executable file of the Cloud recovery tool below.

This is what I get when I run the version you gave me, the zip file. Thank you.

Unfortunately, I wouldn't be able to help you with that problem.

Try clean installing W10 instead.

If that doesn't work either, use another PC, because something doesn't sound right to me.

Hi,

I  went to HP site and downloaded the media builder. On the web they said, it will need a driver for SSD so I click on the link and downloaded a driver. there were 4 drivers listed under storage for my laptop. I downloaded sp101499.exe. Now, when I run the bootup thumb drive, after booting from the USB,  it goes to windows setup, i click " install now", it only allows me to do "custom install Windows only". However, it does not find any media to select. when I click on load driver, it does not let me select .exe file that I downloaded. Does it want to see another extension?

Many thanks

Hi:

Windows shouldn't need any storage controller drivers to find the drive in your notebook.

The only suggestion I can offer would be to see if this works:

I zipped up and attached the Intel storage controller drivers below so Windows can find the drive.

Copy all of the files in both folders in the attached file to a USB flash drive.

Have the flash drive and your Windows installation media plugged into USB ports.

Boot from the W11 installation flash drive.

When you get to the screen where no drives can be found, click on the Load driver option, browse to the flash drive with the storage controller drivers on it.

If you check the box, it will only include the compatible driver.

Click Next and if those are the right drivers Windows should find the drive and install.

If those drivers don't work, try the other ones I attached.

Otherwise, you will need to find a way to get the cloud recovery tool to install and create a USB recovery drive for you.
