HI @tpruitt599,
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
Recovering from a failed BIOS upgrade can be a tricky process, but there are several steps you can take to try to restore your system. Here's a step-by-step guide for recovering an HP laptop with a failed BIOS upgrade:
Step 1: Attempt a Hard Reset
Disconnect All External Devices:
- Remove any USB drives, external hard drives, and other peripherals.
Remove Power Sources:
- Unplug the power adapter and remove the battery (if it’s removable).
Drain Residual Power:
- Press and hold the power button for about 15-20 seconds to drain any residual power.
Reconnect Power Sources:
- Reconnect the power adapter (and battery if it was removed).
Attempt to Power On:
- Press the power button to see if the system will boot up.
Step 2: BIOS Recovery Using a Key Press Combination
HP laptops often have a built-in BIOS recovery feature that can be accessed using a specific key press combination:
Turn Off the Computer:
- Make sure the computer is completely off.
Press and Hold the Windows + B Keys:
- While holding these keys, press and hold the power button for about 2-3 seconds, then release the power button but continue holding the Windows + B keys.
Wait for the BIOS Recovery Screen:
- If the recovery screen appears, follow the on-screen instructions to restore the BIOS.
Step 3: Use an HP BIOS Recovery USB Drive
If the key press combination doesn’t work, you can create a BIOS recovery USB drive using another computer:
Download BIOS Update:
- On a working computer, go to the HP Support website and download the latest BIOS update for your specific model.
Prepare a USB Drive:
- Format a USB drive to FAT32. Make sure it's empty.
Create BIOS Recovery USB:
- Extract the BIOS update files to the USB drive. Look for a file named something like HPBIOSUpdate.exe or similar and run it. Follow the instructions to create the BIOS recovery USB drive.
Use the USB Drive to Recover the BIOS:
- Insert the USB drive into the non-working HP laptop.
- Follow the steps for the key press combination (Windows + B) as described earlier, but this time the laptop will use the USB drive to recover the BIOS.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
