Yes you could replace the current 2.5 inch SATA 7200 rpm hard drive with a 2.5 inch SSD OR you could add in an M.2 "gumstick" drive IN ADDITION TO the existing hard drive. You have an M.2 slot located on the right side of the chassis as you have it on its back with rear cover removed, on the opposite side from the hard drive:

See pages 26-34 of the Manual here:

Your Service manual

Your M.2 slot can accept EITHER a SATA M.2 or a PCIe/NVME "gumstick" M.2, the latter being the fastest storage available on the market. Or, as I said you can replace the hard drive with the kind of 2.5 inch SSD that looks like a hard drive on the outside.

Post back if you want to get specific about hardware purchase recommendations or please accept as solution if this si the info you needed.

Can this laptop benefit from an Intel Optane drive card? I did read the information on the HP site but I still have questions. I have a 8th gen 8550 instead of the 7th gen. My bios are up to date but I do not see any information in it for Optane.

Thanks

Yes the Manual would say Optane if that were an option. You can confirm by opening Intel Rapid Storage if you can and if the chipset and hardware can do Optane there will be a checkbox to enable it.
