If I install the 1TB SSD in the M.2 socket and clone the original HDD info,
how do I tell the system to boot from the SSD rather than the old HDD?
Would that be in the BIOS? If so, where?
Or do I have to remove the old HDD to make things work with SSD and then reformat
the HDD before putting it back in for spare storage?
Hope CherylG can help me out.
Thanks

Normally anytime you clone one drive to another the old drive must be removed before first boot of new drive. If you remove it and format before reinstalling the laptop should still boot from SSD. You may have to go into BIOS and move the SSD up as first boot device in Boot options. I have seen a few members report their model refuses to boot from an SSD when a regular hdd is installed but with any luck that won't be the case. If it does refuse to boot you can always buy a USB hdd enclosure to install the hdd in and use it as a backup drive.

Yes, that slot will support an NVME drive at full speed. However, if you are replacing the Optane drive already in there, you must run the Intel Rapid Storage software, the latest that clearly states Optane support; and decouple the Optane from the hard drive. The system sees Optane -cached drives as one storage volume, so if you remove the Optane without decoupling it first the hard drive won't boot or have a useable volume. An easy small step, and after it reboots not using the Optane anymore, you can remove it, install your M.2 drive, and then clone the hard drive.
