HP 960 Wireless keyboard with detached numpad
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)
Hi, I can't produce alt code symbols: the detached numpad doesn't recognize (?) that I'm pressing ALT on the QWERTY keyboard. How do I make alt code symbols using the HP 960's Wireless's two components?

Hi @Alt-codeTeacher,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

The issue you're experiencing with the HP 960 Wireless Keyboard and its detached numpad occurs because the keyboard and numpad function as independent devices, and the ALT key on the keyboard isn't recognized in conjunction with the numpad. Here's how you can address this.

Use On-Screen Keyboard for ALT Codes

  1. Enable the On-Screen Keyboard:
    • Press Win + Ctrl + O to open the On-Screen Keyboard.
  2. Use ALT Codes:
    • Hold down the ALT key on your physical keyboard.
    • Use the on-screen numpad to type the ALT code.

Reassign the Detached Numpad

  1. Ensure the numpad and keyboard are paired correctly:
    • Verify that both components are connected to the same wireless receiver or Bluetooth pairing.
  2. Remap the ALT key:
    • Use a third-party key remapping tool like SharpKeys or AutoHotkey.
    • Set the ALT key on your main keyboard to communicate with the numpad's numeric input.

Use Character Map or Shortcuts

If ALT codes are not essential:

  1. Character Map:
    • Search for "Character Map" in Windows.
    • Copy and paste special characters from the tool.
  2. Windows Unicode Shortcuts:
    • Type U+<hexadecimal code> (e.g., U+00A9 for ©) and press Alt + X.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
