Hp 15-bw011dx laptop

Hi there -

Tearing into a friends Hp 15-bw011dx laptop.  It is really sluggish and the fan always cycles up and down - mostly up.

 

Using CPUID I found that the AMD GPU inside runs really hot.  It gets up to 92 deg C just from running a youtube video. 

I took it all apart and cleaned it all out.  The fan was dirty - but no worse than I have seen.  I reapplied thermal paste to the CPU and cooler. 

 

But by inspection - there is NO heat sink for the GPU at all.  The vents are all open etc.  I can see no reason for these temps.

Anything else I can do or is this just a poor design?  There does not look to be much room for adding an after market heat sink - but if anyone has info on that I would be interested. 

 

BTW - while running a youtube video my readings:

CPU  - 2295 MHz

Motherboard temp - 38 deg C  (it doesn't show up as a CPU temp but... )

GPU 15%

GPU Temp 88 deg C

I am not sure this is really a solution - but after a lot of digging and help at another site:

The best I can figure is - this PC just has undersized cooling and short of adjusting things to NOT use the processing power available - there is no solution.  My favorite is the link to the 1 star reviews at BestBuy 

 

But basically this just seems to be a bad execution and build of a laptop. 

I gave it back to my buddy with a "sorry" shrug and am moving on.

Thank you for posting on the HP Support Community.

 

To get the answer to this question, there is no way to add heat sink on an HP laptop at all. The onboard fan is system managed and it's not possible to change motherboard hardware specs.

 

What you can try to do is to go to "power options" -> "change advanced power settings" -> "processor power management" -> "maximum processor state" and lower it to avoid overheating.
