Microsoft Windows 11

I've had an Hp notebook with model name:HP Laptop 15-dw0xxx for some time now and it has been working well. It came with a 1tb hdd which i've replaced many times. I recently upgraded to a 1tb SSD and it keeps crashing. Any operating system i install ranging from Windows 11, Ubuntu to arch linux keeps crashing and corrupting leaving me with a frustrating clean install. I have clean installed multiple times over days even because every os keeps crashing with the Western Digital SSD i installed. I also replaced the SSD with another one, ran a health check on the ssd(100%), ran memory tests including memtest86+ for over 8 hours(no errors) and i cannot discover why all my operating systems keep crasing every few hours. Do i need to do something more after upgrading the disk on this HP Laptop 15-dw0xxx to an SSD?

Hi @EugeneForce,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

When upgrading to an SSD and experiencing repeated crashes and corruption across multiple operating systems, it suggests there may be an underlying issue. Here are several steps you can take to diagnose and potentially resolve the problem:

Potential Issues and Solutions

BIOS/UEFI Settings:

  • Solution: Ensure that the BIOS/UEFI settings are correctly configured for the SSD. Check if the SATA mode is set to AHCI, which is typically recommended for SSDs.
  • Steps: Restart your laptop and enter the BIOS/UEFI settings (usually by pressing F2, F10, Esc, or Del during startup). Look for SATA configuration settings and ensure AHCI is selected.

SSD Alignment:

  • Solution: Proper SSD alignment is crucial for performance and stability. Use a tool to ensure the partitions are correctly aligned.
  • Steps: Use a tool like MiniTool Partition Wizard or GParted to check and align the partitions.

Power Management Settings:

  • Solution: Adjust the power management settings, especially if the SSD is not getting consistent power.
  • Steps: Go to Control Panel > Power Options > Change plan settings > Change advanced power settings. Under "Hard disk," set "Turn off hard disk after" to "Never".

Cable/Connector Issue:

  • Solution: Check if the SSD connection is secure. A loose or faulty SATA cable/connector can cause instability.
  • Steps: Open your laptop and ensure that the SSD is properly connected. If possible, try using a different SATA cable.

Temperature and Cooling:

  • Solution: Ensure that the SSD is not overheating. High temperatures can cause instability.
  • Steps: Check the laptop’s cooling system and ensure that it’s working properly. Clean any dust from the fans and vents.

Faulty SSD or Compatibility Issues:

  • Solution: Although you have tested multiple SSDs, there could still be compatibility issues or a need for a specific brand/model that works better with your laptop.
  • Steps: Try using a different brand/model of SSD. Sometimes, certain SSDs have better compatibility with specific laptops.

Check for System Errors:

  • Solution: Check system logs to identify any recurring errors or patterns that might point to the cause.
  • Steps: In Windows, open Event Viewer (press Win + X and select Event Viewer) and look for errors in the System and Application logs.

Update Drivers:

  • Solution: Ensure that all system drivers, especially the chipset and storage drivers, are up to date.
  • Steps: Visit the HP support website, find your laptop model, and download the latest drivers.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
