Just purchased the hp 15-r017dx touchsmart. It comes with 4gb of ram, but I've got an 8gb from another laptop I'd like to use. However, I can't figure out how to get into this particular laptop. It doesn't seem to have a removable cover to get into either the ram or the hard drive.

Hi
Go through Page 65 of the manual here,
It says:
You have to Remove the battery and then remove the following components:
● Keyboard
● Top cover
● WLAN module
● System board
So, its not an easily accessible area,
I suggest you to Contact HP for the upgrade.
thanks,

Correct. This laptop design is complicated. You're not missing something so don't feel bad.
This requires removing battery, hard drive, keyboard, 3-4 small cables, 2 bezel wires, one wifi board, 10-13 internal screws and all with the fun of not making a wrong move that can easily break the super fragile parts.
I've changed 1000s of motherboards and I snapped one of the tiny pressure levers that secure the tiny cables in place.
I ended up having to put a little glue to make sure the cable didn't slide out that connected to the Touch Pad on the other side.
Yes, it's a ridiculous design. RAM upgrade should not be so insane but this is all to get you to go to HP support or Best Buy to pay them $50 for this 45 minute task.
Good Luck!
