1. Yes. You need to use the right part number. Please don't ask me why but this will save some head aches.
2. For RAM (sorry I missed this) machine has two customer-accessible/upgradeable memory module slots supporting up to 16 GB of RAM using PC3-10600, 1333-MHz, DDR3 with the following configurations:
● 16384 (8192 × 2)
● 8192 (8192 × 1)
● 8192 (4096 × 2)
● 6144 (4096 + 2048)
● 4096 (2048 × 2)
● 4096 (4096 × 1)
● 3072 (2048 + 1024)
● 2048 (2048 × 1)
You have 4GB of RAM now you can work out what more do you wish to upgrade to 6GB, 8GB or 16GB using above list.
HP parts list for RAM
2-GB (PC3-10600, 1333-MHz, DDR3) 621565-001
4-GB (PC3-10600, 1333-MHz, DDR3) 621569-001
8-GB (PC3-10600, 1333-MHz, DDR3) 634091-001
You can use other vendors RAM but since your machine is an Elitebook my suggeston use HP part # and buy from HP or elseehere (normally cheaper) such as Amazon

@Danny2g6 wrote:That was my question as well. Thank you for the info. Would you happen to also know which gpus are compatible?
Page 2 of the following document shows few GPU's
http://h10032.www1.hp.com/ctg/Manual/c03253774.pdf
BUT not all machines have MXM slot. Please use a list on page 116 of the manual for a suitable board.
