Hi,
I've had my Elitebook for only 3 years and since a week ago it won't start. At first I could get it to start eventually but when I moved it, the screen completely froze so I had to force a reset. And then yesterday after updating the BIOS it doesn't start at all. Occatiobally the "caps lock" button will flash after holing in the powerbutton but then it shuts down and nothing more happens. I changed the battery only last fall. I'm wondering if it's worth repairing or if it's just better to buy a new laptop even though this one was really expensive (almost $2000!!) and I'd hoped it would last more than 3 years.. thank you for replies!

I would install a new battery.
Can you elaborate on the following statement that you made. It is not really clear as to what you mean specifically.
"At first I could get it to start eventually but when I moved it, the screen completely froze so I had to force a reset."

I´m not sure if it´s the bettery´s problem since it lits up when I plug in the charger.. and as I said, I sent it for repairs through HP for them to change the battery only 6 months ago.
So in the beginning the laptop wouldn´t start efter going into sleep mode so I had to force it to restart by holding in the power button. Then 2-3 days later it wouldn´t start after holing in the power button. I would hold it in (with the laptop connected to the charger) several times before the laptop eventually started again. But after a few times doing this (ie foring it to restart after not being able to start efter going into sleep mode) the screen froze once the computer started. So I would be able to start it but not do anything else after comning to the home screen. One time the keyboard wouldn´t work even though the screen wasn´t frozen (which also meant I had to force it to shut off). And then since yesterday it won´t turn on at all, no matter how long or how many times I hold in the power button.

Is your laptop still in its warranty period?

Sadly no, the waranty expired in Feburary. That´s why I had the battery changed right before it expired (since the battery was showing signs of not functioning properly I thought it best to change it before something happened). I contacted HP and asked what other options I have without the waranty and they replied that they can email a cost suggestion for repairs. Depending on the problem ofc, but they esimated that it might cost around $600-700. I´m also looking into other options at a local technology store and they said that I might be better of buying a new laptop since most only last 3-5 years and that "fixing it" might only make it last for a year at best (since the other parts will still be old and "fixing" a laptop seldom turns out that great in the first place...). But I´m not sure if it´s a big or small problem and if it´s worth fixing..

Had you considered trying to recover the BIOS?
Connect the power adapter to the laptop.
Hold down the Windows key + the B key.
Press the power button.
Keep holding those keys down until the Recovering BIOS message appears onscreen.
It may take up to almost a minute before the laptop firmware responds.

Thanks for the suggestion, I just tried that and the kewboard flashed and then the computer started but I couldn´t log in since the kewboard didn´t respond so I had to force it to shut off again, and as before, couldn´t get it to turn on again after that..

How about trying a Power Reset.
See the tutorial at the HP web document below.
