Thanks - tried that previously and no luck. Was on phone w/HP for over an hour and nothing worked - they told me I would need to do a restore (which I don't want to do, as it would take too long to rebuild everything) or take to Best Buy. Took to Best Buy and they said they couldn't help as I didn't buy it at Best Buy (bought direct from HP online), soooooo bought a USP port with multiple ports and plugged in to the generic USP and have been using that for multiple devices - guess I decided to live with the 'non-working' 3.0's as I can't be without the laptop and if I ever need to send to HP in the future, will have them address at that time. Appreciate you responding, though...

I have the same problem too!!!!!

Am not sure it's an HP thing though, but am pretty miffed with the whole USB 3 thing to say the least.

I must say, I had totally given up on the whole issue of EVER getting my USB 3 port to work on my Envy 1050ea 17, despite - and this is no exaggeration  - countless re-installations of Ranesas drivers, uninstallations of USB hubs, downloads of new drivers, etc, etc, etc.

The problem is that my usb 3 port is ok with a small flash drive/stick, but won't recognize at all, an external Toshiba hard drive (this hard drive is also powered via USB) . I need to add that with the memory stick, I have yet to get anything approaching the 'lightning' speeds promised in the blurb. Normally, it averages out to bout 20 - 25 Mbs. Hmmm, breakneck stuff.

Like I said, have tried repeatedly going into Device Manager, re-installing USB 3 drivers etc, to absolute no avail.

I said earlier that I had given up on the whole issue, it was better for my emotional well being that I simply accepted that the whole USB 3 thing was a totally worthless gimmick which completely fails to live up to anything near its promises. Believe me, I have spent countless hours of total frustration trying to resolve this issue.

Help on this issue would be deeply appreciated!!!

Alll the best and thanks in advance, Mark.

I have problems with USB 3.0 on my HP Envy 17 and I saw a lot of people on many different model HP laptops having problems with USB 3.0 ports.

The drives work with an externally powered HUB so my suspicion is that he onboard controller(s) or the USB power circuitry is not supplying enough power for USB 3.0 devices.

I have a DROBO mini with 4+1 drives and a USB HUB on the left side which work but the DROBO and the HUB use their own drivers not MS, HP, or INTEL and are externally powered.

Not sure if this problem can be fixed in software.

USB 2.0 drives work in USB 3.0 ports and the WD passport works for a short while then is lost suddenly.

I attached the same two USB-powered drives, a Toshiba 1TB and a WD Passport 500GB on a 5 year old Samsung laptop  with an i-5 processor running Win 7 and both drives work fine simultaneously.

On the new HP-Envy 17 they do not work individually or together except on an external HUB where only one drive comes up at a time (the Toshiba 1TB has occassional problems on the External HUB - it is a larger drive).

HP has to fix this somehow - universal complains.

I have the same problem with my HP Envy Ultrabook.  When I followed these instructions the only impact that I observed was that the touchscreen feature became disabled.
