HP ProBook 650 G1
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Hello, I have a Probook 650 G1 with i3 4000M CPU and I'm trying to upgrade it to  i7 4702MQ CPU with same 37W TDP but it wont't boot. It is possible that the CPU is defective but I have no way of testing it. It could also be that the CPU is unsupported so I tried to find the solution online and apparently there are  ProBook 650 G1 laptops with i7 4702MQ CPU. The difference between these and mine is that my version has an Intel HM87 chipset and HP 1993 motherboard.  The i7 versions have QM87 chipset and in the case that i found online it was a HP 2101 motherboard. Intel QM87 and HM87 chipsets both support i7 4702MQ CPU so that shouldn't be the problem. I have updated the BIOS to the latest version (ver1.49, 9/19/2019)). On setup it states that the BIOS is for L77 and L78 family ROM, L77 for ME SKU, and L78 for Full ME SKU.

There was an older topic about this and on the last post suggests there are two sets of boards for dual and quad core  cpus:

https://h30434.www3.hp.com/t5/Notebooks-Archive-Read-Only/Upgrading-CPU-on-a-Probook-650-G1/td-p/587...

Also in bios setup map.ini file:

[SYSTEM_ID]

1993=HPBIOSUPDREC.exe /fl77_0149.bin
1994=HPBIOSUPDREC.exe /fl77_0149.bin
2101=HPBIOSUPDREC.exe /fl78_0149.bin
2102=HPBIOSUPDREC.exe /fl78_0149.bin

So the questionis already been answered but then I found this:

https://browser.geekbench.com/v5/cpu/search?utf8=%E2%9C%93&q=hp+probook+650+g1+i7

They all have HP 1993 motherboard same as mine but I'm a bit suspicious about that information since there isn't a single i7 model on the list with any other type of motherboard.

My question would be is there any hardware limitation on the 1993 board that prevents it from running quad core i7 cpus with same TDP, or is it only a BIOS type (L77 or L78) limitation?

I checked the latest BIOS using intelmicrocodelist: it looks like it has updated microcode for CPUID = 40651 and CPUID = 40661 and the old microcode with CPUID = 306С3 (it seems it is not in priority)

It turns out that the motherboardboard should support processors with CPUID = 40651 and CPUID = 40661. Maybe you need to look for a processor with one of these CPUIDs? The only problem is that I did not find any such CPU with an FCPGA946 socket.

Yes, you are right about the microcode revisions.  I used a similar tool (MC Extractor) to check the bin file. All  have the latest revisions except for CPUID 306C3, it has rev. 25 instead of 27 in both L77 and L78 versions. I looked at Intel microcode update guidance for both revisions and they should support i7 4702MQ in both cases. As for other CPUs I have only this one at my disposal and it would be a nice upgrade, but unfortunately it doesn't work.

Anyway, thank you for your help.
