Hello all!
I have bought a HP Spectre x360 14 inch 2-in-1 laptop with 32GB RAM and 2TB of space. All the reviewers say it has a battery life of around 13 hours, and others say around 11 hours, so this was my expectation. Now after using it for a few days, the battery drains faster than expected. Also, the battery remainder time goes up and down by a lot. Sometimes at 93% it says that I only have 3 hours to go, and then a bit later it says 10 or even 18 hours. But in general, I think I can get around 6/8 hours, which is ok but less than expected and with battery saver on, screen on 30% and fans on battery saver.
Did a quick check and it drains around 1% per 5 minutes, which comes down to around 8 hours. Now using: Whatsapp, Microsoft Edge with 5 pages, Outlook, Teams, 1 word document, 2 folders. This is quite normal, on working days 1 PowerPoint open and 2/3 Excels. And even when I watch Youtube videos, It says at 50% that I can do 2 hours screen time, which sounds crazy.
How is this possible? And can I do something about it? The rest works really great, only the battery disappoints a bit.

Hi @Rickvdwijk,
Welcome to the HP Support Community.
I'd be happy to help you!
Here are a few steps you can take to diagnose and potentially improve your battery performance:
1. Check for Background Processes
- Some background processes or applications might be consuming more power than expected. Use the Task Manager (Ctrl + Shift + Esc) to check for any high CPU or disk usage processes.
- Look for unnecessary startup programs and disable them if they are not needed.
2. Update BIOS and Drivers
- Ensure your BIOS and all drivers are up-to-date. You can use the HP Support Assistant to check for updates automatically:
- Open HP Support Assistant.
- Go to the “Updates” section.
- Install any available updates.
3. Power Settings and Battery Calibration
- Go to Settings > System > Power & sleep > Additional power settings.
- Select the "Power saver" plan if not already selected.
- You might also need to calibrate your battery:
- Charge your battery to 100% and then let it discharge completely until the laptop shuts down.
- Recharge it back to 100% without interruption.
4. Windows Power Troubleshooter
- Run the Windows Power Troubleshooter:
- Go to Settings > Update & Security > Troubleshoot > Additional troubleshooters > Power.
- Run the troubleshooter and follow any recommendations.
5. Adjust Display Settings
- Lower the screen brightness as you’ve already done.
- Consider using the “Night light” feature to reduce blue light, which can help conserve battery.
6. Close Unused Applications and Tabs
- Having multiple applications and browser tabs open can significantly drain your battery.
- Close any applications or tabs that you are not actively using.
7. Battery Health Check
- Check your battery’s health using the HP Battery Health Manager:
- Open HP Support Assistant.
- Select “Battery and performance” from the options.
- Follow the instructions to check the health of your battery.
8. Reduce External Device Usage
- Disconnect any external devices (e.g., USB drives, external mouse) that are not in use, as they can drain power.
9. Advanced Power Settings
- Go to Control Panel > Hardware and Sound > Power Options > Change plan settings > Change advanced power settings.
- Adjust the settings for sleep, display, and processor power management to optimize battery usage.
Hope this helps! Keep me posted for further assistance.

Hi Elohi,
Thank you for the message! Almost all those points I am already using. This morning I had a short video call of 15 minutes, had teams open and Edge with 2 pages, lost 30% battery in less than 2 hours. I have done all the checks etc but cannot find any problem. As I said, did not expect to get 13:30 hours of battery time because that is in optimal conditions, but 5 hours less with no heavy stuff feels too much for me. I want to enjoy my new laptop to the fullest but now I am all the time checking battery % and it stays in my head.
