Either the battery was discharging internally (unlikely) or some circuitry was still active while shut down (possible if some optional setting was activated, like watching for a wake-up signal from a bluetooth device or the Internet). I could find no such optional setting and so assumed that the motherboard was disconnected by a relay while shut down. What else could be drawing current? Watson, you are sitting on my pipe! (Sherlock had looked for it in all other possible locations). In this case it was a USB flash drive that I kept installed in the USB port on the left side. This was apparently causing some battery drain because removing it solved the problem. Now I can leave the fully-charged laptop shut down for three weeks and it still shows 82% charge when started.
