Hp zbook studio G5 x360
Microsoft Windows 11

I have a HP zbook studio G5 x360 with an i7 9th gen and a Quadro P2000. The maximum rated power draw (150W) exceeds the max power capabilities of the USB-C ports, which is capt at 100W. The ports do support charging since plugging in a charger notifies me that the charger provided does not meet the required power draw of the laptop (which is obviously true under heavy load).  Since it does support charging, I tried using a 100W USB-C PD charger to charge the laptop under regular/ low power conditions, however, the same message keeps popping up. This support document https://support.hp.com/ee-en/document/c06473057  states that, when the laptop power draw exceeds the 100W limit, the laptop refuses to charge via the USB-C port (for obvious reasons). However, even when I do not exceed the 100W limit (power meter), the laptop still notifies me and refuses to charge.

Is there a logical solution or explanation why I  apparently do have to capability to charge via USB-C, but not allowed (software limiting)? Having the ability to charge the laptop with a 100W USB-C charger would be nice!

Your notebook was delivered with a 150 W Smart Power Adapter that plugs into the power port on the right hand side of the notebook.  I suggest using that port and the supplied power adapter.

That is how it was designed.

Thanks for the Reply. I am aware that the laptop was designed to be used with the 150w barrel plug (there are models that have a tdp of lower than 100w that is delivered with a USB-C charger). This does not mean than i have to stick with the standard charger in case of emergency or not wanting to disconnect my home charger, i want the possibility of charging via USB - C and at this point i dont know why i am unable to do this.

There does exist the possibility that an HP USB Type-C  Smart power adapter is required.

I use the HP Product Content Browser to find out what is compatible with any of HP's devices. I do not see any HP USB Type-C Smart Power adapters listed.

The only compatible power adapter listed is the one that your ZBook was delivered with.

I see no other guaranteed compatible power adapter option for your ZBook mobile work station.
