Your HP EliteBook 820 G1 Notebook PC according to: https://support.hp.com/id-en/document/c03955656 and: http://h10032.www1.hp.com/ctg/Manual/c04657844.pdf, allows you to fit an M.2 NVMe 2242 SSD:
Hope this was helpful.

However, I could not find any HP EliteBook 820 G1 rig that actually used an M.2 SSD drive here: UserBenchmark: HP EliteBook 820 G1 Compatible Components, which is very strange. You better check your motherboard to see if there is an M.2 SSD slot.

FYI: The best performing SATA SSDs for an HP EliteBook 820 G1 as per the aforementioned UserBenchMark link are these:
1.) Samsung 870 QVO MZ-77Q1T0B (1 TB)
2.) Crucial CT500MX500SSD1 (500 GB) / CT1000MX500SSD (1 TB)
