Hi,
You can use a Gen 4 M2 PCIe NVMe SSD. However since the slot on your machine is Gen 3 it will not use the extra speed. So, it is noty worth paying the extra cost for a Gen 4 M2 SSD.
The Samsung 980 (gen 3) would be a good choice.

Hope it helps,

Is the Samsung 980 the highest read/write speed the elitebook can handle? Or something faster for it? Gen 3 slot. Reason I say this because I do alot of flashing bootloaders on Android devices, etc. The original 256gb ssd is terrible slow, plus dual booting W10 and Linux so it's pretty taxed already.
