My hp envy laptop display brightness went down to show it was low on battery so I plugged it in. As soon as I plugged it in the whole computer turned off and won't turn back on, the charging light also won't come on. There shouldn't be any problem with the charger so I'm wondering if there's anything I can do and what the problem might be?

Hi @AngelinaAllan

Welcome to the HP Support Community! We're here to help you get back up and running.

Thanks for sharing the details — that situation sounds frustrating, especially when the device shuts down unexpectedly during a critical moment.

Let's walk through a few steps to help isolate and potentially resolve the issue:

Initial Troubleshooting Steps

Perform a Hard Reset
This helps clear residual power and reset hardware connections:

  • Disconnect the AC adapter and remove any external devices.
  • If the battery is removable, take it out.
  • Press and hold the power button for 15 seconds.
  • Reconnect only the power adapter and try powering on.
    Step-by-step guide for hard reset

Inspect the Power Adapter and Port

  • Confirm the adapter is securely connected and the cable isn’t damaged.
  • Try a different wall outlet.
  • If available, test with another compatible HP adapter to rule out power delivery issues.

Check for Charging Light or Signs of Power

  • Look for any LED indicators near the charging port.
  • If there's no light, it could suggest a power circuit issue or a failed battery.

BIOS Recovery Attempt
If the system doesn’t power on, try triggering BIOS recovery:

  • Press and hold Windows + B, then press and hold the Power button for 2–3 seconds.
  • Release the power button but continue holding Windows + B for another 10 seconds.
  • If successful, the BIOS recovery screen should appear.

Inspect for Overheating or Internal Faults

  • If the laptop was warm before shutdown, internal thermal protection may have triggered.
  • Allow the device to cool down for 30 minutes before retrying.

If the Issue Persists

If none of these steps restore power or charging indicators, the issue may involve:

  • A failed DC-in board or power circuit
  • A battery fault preventing power flow
  • A deeper motherboard-level failure

Hii so I had left my computer alone for a few days and when I went to try the advice you had given the charging light decided to start working again. When trying to power on the computer though it'll only get to the point where the keyboard lights up and fan turns on but the screen won't light up at all. I tried doing the windows +b and power button for the BIOS page like you said but still nothing would come up on the screen.

Is there any different advice you could give for how it's acting now? Thank you very much for trying to help me.

@AngelinaAllan

We sincerely thank you for your patience and co-operation during this troubleshooting process.

Thanks for the update—and I understand how frustrating this can be. Since your HP Envy powers on partially (keyboard lights, fan), but the screen stays black, it’s likely a firmware (BIOS), display, or motherboard-level issue

Let’s try a few more advanced steps to narrow it down.

Step-by-Step Troubleshooting for Black Screen on Startup

1. Hard Reset (Power Drain)

This helps clear static or temporary glitches:

Power off the laptop completely.

Unplug the charger and disconnect any external devices (USBs, HDMI, etc.).

Press and hold the power button for 15–20 seconds.

Plug in the charger and try turning it on again.

2. External Display Check

To rule out a screen issue:

Connect your laptop to an external monitor or TV using HDMI.

Power on the laptop.

Press Windows + P (wait a second), then tap the arrow key down a couple times and hit Enter.

Repeat this a few times to cycle through display modes.

If your external display shows the desktop, the internal display may be faulty or disabled.

3. BIOS Recovery with Windows + B

Since you’ve tried it already, try again but with a slight variation:

Turn the laptop completely off.

Hold down Windows + V (instead of B).

While holding the keys, press and hold the power button for 2–3 seconds, then release the power button but keep holding the keys for about 10 more seconds.

If it works, the screen will turn on and start BIOS recovery (you may hear beeping).

If both Windows+B and Windows+V don’t bring up BIOS recovery, continue below.

4. Try a CMOS Battery Reset (If Applicable)

If you're comfortable opening the laptop:

Disconnect the battery and remove the CMOS coin-cell battery for 5–10 minutes.

Reinstall, reconnect, and try powering on again.

This resets low-level firmware settings and has helped in black-screen cases.

5. Check with Flashlight

Shine a flashlight closely on the black screen at an angle.

If you see a very dim image (like a login screen), the backlight or display cable could be damaged.

If All Else Fails

If none of these steps bring up a display:

The issue may involve the motherboard, GPU, or embedded controller firmware.

In this case, service may be needed, especially if the unit is under warranty.

Let me know how these steps go. If the screen comes on or you hear any beeps or changes, I can help interpret those too.
