Hi,
Im sorry to bother you all with this old case,
My name is German, i'm an architect in Venezuela, and i do own the HP Pavilion DV6 7014nr since 2013.
I use this laptop to make some plans and light 3d modeling on construction fields and it still work like a charm, the new laptops are better and faster but not to keep them close to dusty environments.
I just wanted to know if i can upgrade the CPU to a slightly better one, the Intel Core I7 3820qm or the Intel Core I7 3940XMand if is only swapping the cpu or do i have to use another BIOS, drivers, etc.
I've already did some research for the Intel Core I7 3820qm:
in the link below says that it's compatible for just 77%
http://www.cpu-upgrade.com/CPUs/Intel/Core_i7_Mobile/i7-3610QM.html
and here it shows the compatibility using the same socket G2 as long as i use the PGA model an not the BGA
http://www.cpu-world.com/CPUs/Core_i7/Intel-Core%20i7-3820QM%20(PGA)%20Mobile%20processor.html
and for the Intel Core I7 3940xm:
in the link below says that it's compatible for just 38%
http://www.cpu-upgrade.com/CPUs/Intel/Core_i7_Mobile/i7-3610QM.html
The thing is, i want to upgrade this processor to the one that offers higher frequency and more cache memory than the one i got in the Intel Core I7 3610qm, I am open to any suggestions available outside of the aforementioned and if i need to update the drivers after the installation of the recommended one.
I've already upgraded the hard disk to an ssd an the ram to a 16gb (8x2) corsair vengeance, the other specs remains as shown on HP webpage.
Model: HP DV6 7014 NR
Product number: A5F76AV
Serial number: 2CE3014BPS
BIOS (configuration): F.2E - 09/07/2016
Thanks in advance!

Your existing processor is a 45w and Quad Core so already using the best motherboard. You can upgrade to a i7-3820QM which is tested by HP and was offered an optional configuration so assured as much as possible it will work.
Clock speed would go to 2.7 ghz and L3 cache to 8 megs. Should be maybe a 25% increase in pure floating point performance.
Its a drop in replacement use the same fan and heatsink, etc.
Most computer techs will flash the BIOS to the latest version before a CPU upgrade just out of principle. But your F.2E is already the latest.
These processors are strong performers and still bring a pretty high price. But if a $125 upgrade will let you keep using it for another year or more then a $125 investment seems worth it if you can do the labor yourself. I might balk at spending $3-400 for part and labor on a cost-benefit analysis.
Other even faster processors would MAYBE work, hard to know in advance but the 3820QM is almost certain to work. No 100% in computer upgrades I am sorry to say.
Post back with any other questions and please accept as solution if its the info you needed.

Hi GermanGo,
Yes, the Intel® Core i7-3820QM 2.70-GHz processor (8.0-MB L3 cache, 45 W) was optional for your notebook model.
Upgrading to this one should give it a boost. with its 8mb L3 cache.
It is compatible with your notebook.
It is recommended that you use the HP processor part number (HP p/n 681284-001) to find the processor you need.

Thanks Huffer!
Those ebay links you’ve posted i’ve Already watch them
You’re right about the 3940xm! The more wattage, the more heat!
and if I upgrade to a Intel Core i7-3840QM (SR0UT) instead of the Intel Core I7-3820QM (SR0MJ)? As long as they are PGA and not BGA
I’ve already read all the links Erico posted but I want to know if I can give that extra speed with this latest model: Intel Core I7-3840QM
