I want to upgrade my ram to 3 or 4 gb but i think current bios supports only 2gb ram and even I'm trying to boot it with 3gb ram, it doesn't work. Can you help me with it? It's product name is hp pavilion dv6000 and has Processor: Intel Core Duo T2500 2 x 2 GHz (Intel Core Duo)

The Service Manual is not easy to locate but does indicate 2 gb is the maximum memory. The laptop is about 17 years old and is designed to run Windows XP

What memory are you using? I seem to recall these will run 3gb but not 4 but memory is hazy...there is no BIOS update that will affect max memory TMK but for the record, which BIOS version are you running? @Paul_Tikkanen would recall this better than I.

Hi, @Cybersecbyte
I am not aware of a non-booting issue with 3 GB of memory installed, so you may have installed an incompatible memory chip, but perhaps updating the BIOS will help.
You need a DDR2-5300 or DDR2- 6400 memory chip that is dual ranked and has 8 little black memory chips on each side of the circuit board, not 4. Something like this.
There is a problem with 2 x 2 GB of memory without a certain version BIOS update or newer--the notebook will blue screen.
There was a BIOS update that added support for 2 x 2 GB of DDR2-5300 or DDR2-6400 memory, but since HP has completely removed all of the release notes, I don't know which version that support was added to.
The good news is, I can give you the info and exe files to the last BIOS update HP released for your notebook.
The bad news is that the BIOS updates were written to be run on XP and Vista, so update the BIOS in W7 at your own risk.
This person did successfully update the BIOS in W7:

Since the BIOS updates are cumulative, the last BIOS update would also add this support.

As Huffer indicated, even with 2 x 2 GB of memory installed the max memory that can be addressed by Windows will be 3 GB, not 4 GB.
