I was going to close the laptop and felt some resistance. When I looked at the screen, there was a stress mark on the bottom left corner and upon further inspection, it was evident that the hinge has failed and was pushing the screen out. I supported the screen and opened the screen and am using it without moving the screen.

I contacted HP and they just said it's out of warranty so it is a paid repair. I don't understand how a hinge just fails. It's not a laptop that gets travelled with. It sits on a table and is used for a few hours each day. The hinge mechanism failing cannot be blamed on the customer as it is not something that we have access to and if the hinge isn't designed to take regular opening and closing over 2 years, it is pitiful. The battery is still awesome and I still get about 4.5 to 5 hours of use every day. The failing point in electronics used to be batteries but I guess now it is the hardware.
HP quoted me £314.29 to get the hinge repaired. When I said that is half the price of the laptop, they came back with a discounted price of around £265 :).
If you have a similar issue, be careful with the screen and support it in the hinge region and go to an electronics shop to get it fixed. Im sure it will be a lot cheaper and quicker too. HP didn't resolve the issue but I guess now we know how much it costs from HP.
