hey guys, on my
HP OmniBook X Flip 2-in-1 Laptop Next Gen AI 16-as0005na (BH3F8EA)
the L key has got a vertical bar at the top and a backslash at the bottom, I am unable to type either of these out. I have tried alt + L and altGr + L and no luck.

Hi @DSS10
Welcome to the HP Support Community! We're here to help you get back up and running.
I'm really sorry you're facing this. When the backslash (\) and vertical bar (|) are printed on the L key, it usually means the keyboard layout has been changed from the standard English (US) configuration.
These characters are normally found on the key above Enter, not on L.
Let’s walk through a few steps to restore proper typing functionality:
Step-by-Step Fix: Unable to Type Backslash and Vertical Bar
1. Check Keyboard Layout
- Go to Settings > Time & Language > Language & Region.
- Under Preferred languages, click your language (e.g., English).
- Click Options.
- Under Keyboards, make sure US QWERTY is selected.
- If another layout (e.g., UK, International, or custom) is listed, remove it.
The UK layout places \ and | on different keys, which may explain the mismatch.
2. Switch Input Method Temporarily
- Press Windows + Spacebar to cycle through available keyboard layouts.
- Try typing \ and | again using the key above Enter.
3. Use On-Screen Keyboard to Confirm Layout
- Press Windows + Ctrl + O to open the On-Screen Keyboard.
- Look for the \ and | keys visually.
- Click them to confirm they work.
This helps verify whether the issue is layout-related or hardware-specific.
4. Test with External Keyboard
If available, plug in a USB or Bluetooth keyboard:
- Try typing \ and | using the external keyboard.
- If they work, the issue may be with the physical mapping or firmware of the built-in keyboard.
You’re doing everything right by catching this early—I’ll stay with you until it’s resolved.
