My printer doesn't work as I keep getting an error message " cartidge problem". I show magenta is out of ink. Why won't it allow me to print anything, even in black or white?

The printers listed in this document cannot print when one ink cartridge is empty.
Your printer is designed to print only when all ink cartridges have ink. Some ink from all the ink cartridges is used in periodic servicing tasks. This helps to prevent issues such as print-head clogs and poor print quality. There is no way to bypass this feature.

During the warming up process, printer will check itself and it may stop when something is missing to avoid further damage. I know firmware can fix this but HP would not willing to implement this because the life of printers get shorter. You would not buy printer every 3 or 4 years would you ? Older printers are more reliable and easy to use.
Hope this makes sense.
Regards.
