tldr: does 15s-fq0030ur notebook support second RAM slot or does it accept 16gb one instead of the default 8gb one.
I have bought an extra RAM for 8gb, exactly the same as the one I already had in my laptop.
I do have an extra slot for the extra RAM, however it does not work. The RAM stick itself is not defective (works on the default slot) and the default RAM stick does not wor on the second slot either.
I would definetely want to upgrade to 16gb anyway, so I want to undestand, what do I do next.
- The slot is defective and is supposed to work, then I will try taking it to a repair shop.
- The slot is not supposed to work (then why the heck would you even put it there?) so I can either return the 8gb RAM back to the shop or exchange it for the 16gb one (hopefully I can do either of those)
However as for the second option, I am not entirely sure, if I would be able to use a 16gb RAM stick instead of the original 8gb.
The description of the laptop does indicate, that initial memory is 8gb, but it does not indicate, if its going to accept a 16gb one or if it is expandable through a second RAM stick.
So my question is if 15s-fq0030ur notebook supports second RAM slot or accepts 16gb one instead of the default 8gb one.

Hi, @kpique
I cannot find any info on your notebook.
What model processor does it come with?
Based on the Crucial memory report for your notebook is seems like it comes with an AMD Ryzen processor, has two memory slots and each slot supports a max of 16 GB of memory.
Memory RAM & SSD Upgrades | hp - compaq | hp 15 series | HP 15s-fq0030ur | Crucial.com
I would have to conclude the motherboard is defective and needs to be replaced.
I also suggest you do the following to determine how much memory your notebook can support (if the 2nd slot was working)...
1. In the search box, search for cmd and click Run as administrator. This will open the command prompt.
2. Once command prompt is opened, type wmic memphysical get maxcapacity and hit enter. There, it will show the maximum RAM capacity your PC's motherboard can support.
The capacity is shown as Kilobytes, so you have to convert it to Gigabytes by dividing the number provided in the report by 1,048,576.

hi
see this
Two SODIMM slots, not customer accessible or upgradeable
DDR4-2400 dual channel support (DDR4-3200 bridge to 2666, DDR4-2666 downgrade to DDR4-2400)
Supports up to 16 GB maximum system memory in the following configurations:
●16 GB (8 GB × 2)
●12 GB (8 GB × 1 + 4 GB × 1)
●8 GB (8 GB × 1 or 4 GB × 2)
●4 GB (4 GB × 1
so no according to this
but in rare cases it may work

Hi @Paul_Tikkanen , thanks for your reply.
It came with Intel i5-8265U
I saw your comment with the commands under some other post and I tried doing it earlier today. It says 32 gb, so I would suppose it should be ok to just replace the 8gb with a 16 in the first slot.
Especially if the motherboard issue ends up costing more than upgrading RAM stick since I wont be needing more that 16 gb of RAM.

You're very welcome.
The i5-8265U should support a 16 GB DDR4-2400 or 2666 MHz memory bar in the working slot.
That would definitely be a better option to replacing the motherboard if your notebook is not under warranty.
I recommend one of the 16 GB crucial memory bars listed in the report.
You can buy that memory in Russia. Change the country flag at the top of the Crucial website and select Russia from the list.

@Paul_Tikkanen You can easily find the model
Microprocessor | Intel® Core™ i5-8265U (1.6 GHz base frequency, up to 3.9 GHz with Intel® Turbo Boost Technology, 6 MB cache, 4 cores) |
Memory, standard | 8 GB DDR4-2400 SDRAM (1 x 8 GB) |

I could not find the model, and if that was the case, why did you post a service manual for models that come with the AMD Ryzen processors?
11-06-2021 12:29 PM - edited 11-06-2021 12:33 PM
I did not have time to research everything, I simply gave the reference of the manual, given by hp !
then I left the forum for personal reasons
https://support.hp.com/us-en/product/hp-15-f0000-laptop-pc/28812014/model/31127750/manuals
one more inconsistency
and as rare are those who report errors of this type, it is not ready to change
But how come you couldn't find the product page, it worked fine for me ..

What difference does it make?
I couldn't find the specs page. It's as simple as that.
These are the results I get when I enter that model number in my Bing search engine...
