HP Pavilion Gaming Desktop TG01-2170m CTO

Hello,

I purchased this PC for my nephew (HP Pavilion Gaming Desktop TG01-2170m CTO) He is using it quite a bit and has basically taken over his use for a PS5. What can I upgrade for him to run bigger games? Right now things lag on like dead by daylight at a higher frame rate. He can play on it 30 FPS right now.

He plays alot of bigger games on the PS5 like RE4- Villge- Dead by Daylight

I was thinking of upgrading the card and the power supply but not sure where to start w it as this is all very new, but will be willing to learn!

Here are the specs on the Desktop:

  • HP Pavilion Gaming Desktop TG01-2170m CTO
  • 21C1 Cycle AV
  • AMD Radeon™ RX 5500 Graphics (4 GB GDDR6 dedicated)
  • 512 SSD storage
  • HP black wired keyboard with volume control and wired optical mouse kit
  • BU RCTO UMA PAV GAM TG01-2 B550A US
  • 16 GB DDR4-3200 SDRAM (2 x 8 GB)
  • Realtek Canary ac 2x2 +Bluetooth 5 M.2 2230 PCI-e+USB WW with 2 Antennas
  • Windows 11 Home 64 Plus
  • OSLOC US
  • AMD Ryzen™ 3 5300G (4.0 GHz up to 4.2 GHz, 8 MB L3 cache, 4 cores)
  • FLAG EPEAT
  • FLAG ENERGY STAR Qualified
  • DIB Omen Command Center Flyer US
  • WARR 1/1/0 US
  • CKIT HP CTO PAV 21C1 US

I feel like something with a rx 6500 xt would run what he wants to run fine again just not all sure what else needs to be upgraded and so on.

Thank you for any feedback in advance

Hi @Julian52 ,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

It's great that you want to upgrade the HP Pavilion Gaming Desktop TG01-2170m CTO to improve its gaming performance. The primary components you should consider upgrading for better gaming performance are the graphics card and possibly the power supply unit (PSU). Here are some recommendations and steps:

1. Graphics Card (GPU) Upgrade:

The AMD Radeon RX 5500 is a decent mid-range GPU, but for playing more demanding games at higher frame rates, you might consider upgrading to a more powerful GPU.

A good option could be the AMD Radeon RX 6500 XT, as you mentioned. It's a more recent and more powerful GPU that should handle games like Resident Evil Village and Dead by Daylight at higher frame rates.

2. Power Supply Unit (PSU) Upgrade:

When upgrading the GPU, it's essential to check if the existing power supply unit can handle the power requirements of the new graphics card. If not, you may need to upgrade the PSU as well.

Ensure the new PSU has enough wattage to support the upgraded GPU. A good 500W to 600W power supply should be sufficient for most mid-range GPUs.

Steps for Upgrading:

Research: Look for reviews and benchmarks for the specific GPU you are considering to ensure it meets your performance expectations.

Check Compatibility: Verify the compatibility of the chosen GPU with your motherboard and case.

Purchase: Once you've made your decision, purchase the new GPU and PSU.

Installation: Follow the manufacturer's guidelines for installing the new components. Ensure that you properly uninstall existing GPU drivers before installing the new ones.

Testing: After installation, test the system with your nephew's favorite games to ensure improved performance.
