I have a HP Elitebook 840 G6 and 3 monitors in use off docking station. No issues. Using VGA to VGA, HDMI to DP, and DP to DP. Trying to add a 4th, not the laptop. Only USB ports left. Bought a hub with USB 2, USB 3 , Display Ports, HDMI, and VGA.
I can see all monitors in settings but 2 are always inactive.
At most with hub including laptop can only get 3 monitors. Is my laptop capable of 4 monitors?

What is the hub ? What is your HDMI to DP (cable/adapter ? You need a bidirectional adapter to be able to connect HDMI (machine) to DP (monitor) .
All I can see the hub is NOT compatible with your machine. Please use the right hub/dock such as HP USB-C G5 dock. Even a proper dock you can only get
The line in yellow is the one I tested with few HP machines and a Dell machine. I'm using the dock with my HP 840 G5 now.
