OMEN Desktop PC 25L GT12-0000i (7WM06AV)
Microsoft Windows 11

I have crashing issues semi-frequently, not as much recently, sadly I have to run my games on the lowest graphics settings and can rarely go above 60FPS without crashing.

Hi @Liam4444,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to assist you.

It sounds like your OMEN 25L GT12 is struggling with stability, which could be caused by several factors—aging hardware, power supply limitations, overheating, or even driver issues. Before upgrading, it’s a good idea to pinpoint the exact cause of the crashes.

Preliminary Steps Before Upgrading

Check Temps & Power Usage:

  • Use HWMonitor or MSI Afterburner to check CPU and GPU temperatures under load.
  • If your GPU or CPU is hitting high temps (85°C+), you might need better cooling.
  • Ensure your power supply (PSU) is adequate for any planned GPU upgrade.

Update Drivers & BIOS:

  • Use NVIDIA/AMD drivers (if applicable) and update through GeForce Experience or AMD Adrenalin.
  • Update your BIOS and chipset drivers from HP’s website.

Run a Stability Test:

  • Test with OCCT or Prime95 to check if crashes occur under CPU or GPU load.

Check PSU Wattage:

  • What wattage is your current PSU? If you’re upgrading your GPU, make sure the PSU can handle it.

Upgrade Recommendations

GPU

Best Performance Option (if PSU supports it):

  • NVIDIA RTX 4070 / RTX 4060 Ti – Good performance without extreme power draw.
  • AMD RX 7700 XT / RX 7800 XT – AMD cards offer great VRAM and performance.

Budget Option:

  • NVIDIA RTX 3060 Ti / RTX 4060 – These are solid mid-tier options.
  • AMD RX 6600 XT / 6700 XT – Good for 1080p/1440p gaming.

Power Supply (If Needed)

  • If your current PSU is under 600W, you may need to upgrade.
  • Recommended: 750W 80+ Gold PSU (Corsair RM750x, EVGA SuperNOVA 750W, or Seasonic Focus GX-750).

Additional Upgrades

  • RAM Upgrade:
    • If you have 16GB or less, consider 32GB DDR4-3200+ for better performance in modern games.
  • Storage Upgrade:
    • If you’re on HDD or SATA SSD, upgrading to an NVMe SSD (Samsung 980, WD Black SN850X) can improve loading times.

Final Thoughts

If you're mainly experiencing crashes due to GPU stress, upgrading to a new GPU (and possibly a PSU) should resolve the issue. However, check temps, update drivers, and stress test your PC before investing in new hardware.

Will my motherboard be compatible with these upgrades as long as the power supply is. It's 500W and I plan to upgrade soon.

Hi @Liam4444,

Your OMEN 25L GT12 with an HP-8704 motherboard should support a GPU upgrade as long as:

  1. PCIe Slot Compatibility: The HP-8704 motherboard has a PCIe x16 slot, which supports modern GPUs.
  2. Physical Fit: Ensure the new GPU fits in the case and allows proper airflow. Some high-end GPUs are large and may require removing HDD cages or adjusting layout.
  3. Power Supply (PSU): Your current 500W PSU may limit GPU options. If upgrading, aim for at least 650W+ with an 80+ Gold rating for better power efficiency and headroom.
  4. BIOS Compatibility: HP motherboards may have whitelisting or UEFI limitations, so check if your BIOS is updated before installing a high-end GPU.
