I have been looking now on line and with in this computer and I would like to know what is the max ram I can added to this laptop. It appears I have an open slot for ram and do ram simms have to be matched? Meaning 4 g b in each slot? Or can you have a 4gb and a 12gb for example.

Hi:
Below is the link to the service manual for your notebook.
HP 17 Laptop PC Maintenance and Service Guide
Chapter 1 has the memory upgrade info.
Your notebook has two memory slots and can support 2 x 8 GB of DDR4-2400 memory.
You can add a compatible 8 GB memory chip along with the existing 4 GB memory chip and it should work fine.
Your notebook's memory will still only run in single channel mode with a 4 GB + an 8 GB memory chip.
In order for the memory to run in the higher performing dual channel mode, you need to install memory in matching capacities (2 x 4 GB, 2 x 8 GB) for example.
This should be a compatible DDR4-2400 memory chip for your notebook:
