Hi, I have an HP G62-144DX Notebook PC that I had for years and really like but I wished it was a bit faster. I was wondering if I can upgrade it i3-330m processor to an i7 one. I am completely lost on this subject since everyone I have asked says no but I find in other forums that it can be done. I know that it has 2 cores and 4 threads and that its socket its a g1. the i7-640m has the same cores, threads and same socket so will that chip work on the laptop? any help is appreciated.

Hi:
Below is the link to the service manual for your notebook.
The supported processors can be found in chapter 1.
http://h10032.www1.hp.com/ctg/Manual/c02542455
The manual indicates the i7-620M is the best one you can install.
The 640M may work, but there is no guarantee that it will.
It would be a pure gamble on your part.
The BIOS has to have the microcode for the 640M and there is no way to confirm that it does.
