So I will start with the question:

a) Does my laptop support Samsung 860 EVO 250GB SSD?

- If not, can any of you suggest me  any brand of SSD that is SATA?

b) Since I will be doing this for the first time can any of you tell me the proper tools (ex: Philips head screwdriver) Thank you in advance

c) I'm kind of nervous about the migration process since it is my first time, I worry about that my laptop won't boot in the SSD once I install it. May I ask (just in case) if I can still use my old HDD if my SSD won't work properly, or the HDD might get formatted in the migration tool?

d) I'm doing it by myself since computer repair shops charges me excessively. I have watched a lot of videos on upgrading laptop HDD to SSD so I'm kind of familiarizing my self when I will be upgrading my laptop.

e) By the way I'm coming from a Toshiba 1TB HDD, so basically I'm downgrading my storage to a 250GB SSD but in exchange for speed.

Thank You in advance! If you have any extra tips for me kindly just drop it here 🙂

The specs of your machine is

You can add M.2 NVMe SSD to your machine and use it a boot device, you will gain speed and still have 1 TB 5400 rpm SATA for more storage. You can use

              250GB:              https://www.crucial.com/ssd/p2/ct250p2ssd8/ct17248518

        or  500GB:              https://www.crucial.com/ssd/p2/ct500p2ssd8/ct17248517

There are many videos around to show you how

The following manual is for older series but should be at least 90% similar for your machine

                    http://h10032.www1.hp.com/ctg/Manual/c06691790.pdf

Manual will shows you tools you need to open and close the machine.

Note: This is your first time well, it is up to you to do this on a new machine, very risky.

Regards.

Hi! Thank You for your response really appreciated it. The link where you said "The following manual is for older series but should be at least 90% similar for your machine." isn't available, it says link not found. Also may I ask how big should my M.2 SSD be, I'm opting for a 250GB just for my windows and my hard drive will remain in my computer, is it just enough or there will be a lot of storage left for future windows update? And is M.2 SSD reliable as the SATA? I'm sorry if I kept on asking because this is my first time LOL.

Samsung 860 EVO 250GB SSD is okay as long as it's big enough to hold the data you want to transfer.

  • To transfer Windows only: the SSD you choose should be able to hold data on your system drive.
  • To transfer all data on the original drive: the new SSD should be larger than the used space of the old drive.

A migration tool won't format the source drive but the destination drive, so you can still use your old HDD if the new SSD won't work properly. Learn more from how to upgrade hard drive to SSD in Windows 10.
