My processor is fried. AMD Phenom II quad core I believe it was 2.3 Ghz L2 cache. I want to upgrade without changing the motherboard. What is the fastest processor I can use? I see some 3.0 Ghz but those appear to be desktop processors. Laptops I only see 2.2 available but I want to be sure the socket matches. Will other AMD processors work? Athlon?

Thank you for posting your query on HP Community,
In order to check the compatibility of your notebook, I would recommend you go through the Maintenance and Service guide of your notebook. Here you will find the parts which are tested and compatible on your notebook.
For the part information, go to Chapter 1. Product description - page number 2 & 3
For the spare part number, go to Chapter 3. Illustrated parts catalog - page number - 25, 26 & 27.
Please note, these are the parts which are tested on your PC, If you wish to try other parts you can try it at your own discretion, HP Doesn't recommend any upgrade/downgrade of any hardware parts or software that is bundled with the product. It may affect the manufacturer's warranty and performance.
Alternatively, You could replace the part on your own, use the HP Partsurfer to identify the part: Click here & order it via the HP Parts store (Click here).
Let me know if this helps!
Have a great day ahead!

The advice above is sound. Only use processors known to be compatible based on the Service Manual. I will also add it is extremely rare for the processor to be defective. Many times more common for it to be the motherboard. Do not rely on blink codes: a blink code which seems to be saying "CPU" can be caused by a bad motherboard.
