Hi @Kaykay2024,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

If your HP Pavilion Notebook is running slow and you're having trouble with updates, here are some steps you can follow to troubleshoot and potentially resolve these issues.

Check for Windows Updates:

  • Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update: Check for updates manually and install any that are available. Sometimes, pending updates can cause the system to slow down.

Free Up Disk Space:

  • Disk Cleanup: Open Disk Cleanup by searching for it in the Start menu and select the files you want to delete, such as temporary files, system cache, and old update files.
  • Uninstall Unnecessary Programs: Go to Control Panel > Programs > Uninstall a program and remove programs you no longer need.

Check for Malware:

  • Windows Defender: Perform a full scan using Windows Defender or any reputable third-party antivirus software to ensure your system isn't compromised.

Optimize Startup Programs:

  • Task Manager: Open Task Manager (Ctrl + Shift + Esc), go to the Startup tab, and disable programs that you don't need to start automatically with Windows.

Update Drivers:

  • Device Manager: Open Device Manager, right-click on each device, and select Update driver. You can also visit the HP Support website and download the latest drivers for your specific model.

Run Performance Troubleshooter:

  • Settings > Update & Security > Troubleshoot: Run the performance troubleshooter to find and fix issues automatically.

Check System Integrity:

  • System File Checker (SFC): Open Command Prompt as an administrator and run sfc /scannow to check for and repair corrupted system files.
  • DISM Tool: If SFC finds issues it can't fix, run DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth in Command Prompt.

Manage Visual Effects:

  • Performance Options: Go to Control Panel > System and Security > System > Advanced system settings > Settings under Performance. Select Adjust for best performance to disable unnecessary animations and effects.

Reinstall or Reset Windows:

  • Reset This PC: If the problem persists, you can try resetting your PC. Go to Settings > Update & Security > Recovery > Reset this PC. Choose whether to keep your files or remove everything.

Upgrade Hardware:

  • RAM Upgrade: If your laptop has a low amount of RAM (e.g., 4GB or less), consider upgrading to 8GB or more.
  • SSD Upgrade: If your laptop has a mechanical hard drive, upgrading to an SSD can significantly improve performance.

Update BIOS:

  • HP Support: Visit the HP Support website to check for and install the latest BIOS updates for your specific laptop model.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
