HP Laptop fq0020nr

I need to know how much RAM and SSD storage my laptop can handle before i buy it. I currently have it upgraded from 4GB of ram, and 64GB of EMMC storage to 8GB RAM and 256GB of Sata M2 storage. Could it possibly have 16GB of ram?

Hi:

Chapter 1 of the service manual indicates that 1 x 8 GB of memory is supported in the slot.

Maintenance and Service Guide (hp.com)

Since you discovered that your notebook only has one memory slot (the manual indicates it has two), there's only one way I know of how you can find out if a 16 GB memory chip has any chance of working.

1. In the search box, search for cmd and click Run as administrator.

This will open the command prompt.

2. Once command prompt is opened, type wmic memphysical get maxcapacityEx and hit enter.

There, it will show the maximum RAM capacity your PC's motherboard can support.

The capacity is shown as Kilobytes, so you have to convert it to Gigabytes by dividing the number provided in the report by 1,048,576.

I'm thinking that Windows is going to detect the non-existent memory slot and count it in the memory total.

I'm hoping the report indicates you can install 32 GB of memory, which would be if the notebook had two memory slots.

If the report indicates you can install 32 GB of memory, then a 16 GB memory chip should work.

You should be able to install a 1 TB M.2 SATA SSD in there if you want.
