I need to add RAM to my system. Depending on where you look it is either stuck with 1xDDR4-2400 4GB which is eatin up almost entirerly by windows or it can be expanded. As I mentioned I own a HP Laptop 15-bs234wm. Depending on where you look and who you talk to it may or may not have two slots. The Intel processor, a Pentium Silver series N5000, (very rare) indicates the processor can handle 8GB. Can I simply get an 8GB DDR4-2400 Ram card and replace the 4GB with the 8GB? Can doing this cause damage or simply be ignored. I have been a hardeware electronics technician for over 30 years. My first PC was a Kaypro II in 1983. The new enviroment hardware and software leaves me unsure of myself. Please help if you can. Please no hypothetical answers this PC is my world. Thank you.

I have Envy x360, the service manual says maximum memory is 16 GB. Yesterday i upgraded to 2x16 GB, and works. Dont trust any HP manuals. Your processor supports up to 8 GB RAM. Just simply change it to one 8 GB module, it have to works.

According to the Maintenance and Service Guide models in the series with Intel Core processors have 2 slots. Models in the series with Pentium or Celeron processor have 1 slot.

Intel states the N5000 supports 8gb. HP is sometimes modest with specs. One quick check you can do is visit crucial.com and run their Scanner tool.

In the specifications page for 15-bs234wm it indicates that a DDR4-2400 sodimm is installed. The outdated manual you metion here says I should have a DDR3-1600 card for the units with the N5000 or 4200. My resource monitor indicates I am running memory at 2400mhz. That same monitor says there are two slots. Only one is being used. I truely believe that manual is at least 5 or 6 years old and does not reflect real changes HP has made to this model. The question really is do I just pull out the 4GB and stick in a 8GB or put 4GB in the second slot. Intell specification for their processor says it can handle 8GB.

Not sure where in the Manual you see N5000 has DDR3-1600. I of course haven't read the entire thing but I read this section in Chapter 1,page 3>
Supports up to 4 GB (4096×1) of DDR4-2400 single channel support (Intel Pentium Silver N5000, Celeron N4000 processors)
HP manuals have been known to give a conservative estimate on memory but none of us here can guarantee it will run 8GB of memory. There is a good chance it will since the N5000 supports it. There is also no way to guarantee you have 2 slots when the manual says 1. Best to open it and check I suppose. The scanner tool at crucial.com may be helpful also.
You requested "no hypothetical answers" so I am trying to be as straight forward in my "opinion" as possible.
