All of my doctoral documents are uploaded to the One Drive I have through my university. I would like to add a micro SD card to be able to automatically back those files (mainly word, powerpoint, and SSPS files). Will a micro sd card work for this, and how large of one can I buy?

You can safely use 1TB cards, I know Samsung supplies an adapter with their microSD cards that means you can use microSD card on your machine and other machines which has standard size SD card reader.
Regards.
