I have an HP Pavilion laptop, MDL 15-cs0085cl with 12 GB of Ram. I have two chips an 8MB chip and a 4MB chip. I want to increase the memory to 16GB by replacing the 4MB chip with an 8MB chip. I am trying to find the description and specs for the 8MB chip so I can match it with the new one. Does anyone have any tips and tricks for identifying the installed memory chip without opening the case. This is a lot easier to do with a desktop PC. Thanks.

Hi:
Usually, you don't need to match the memory exactly as long as you buy a compatible chip with the same specs as the one HP installed.
The specs indicate that the memory is DDR4-2400 MHz, which is the fastest speed your notebook's processor can run the memory at.
HP Pavilion - 15-cs0085cl Product Specifications | HP® Customer Support
Run the free utility that I zipped up and attached below and it will tell you all you ever wanted to know about the memory chip installed in your notebook...maker, part number, etc.
Naturally if you can find the same part for a reasonable price, that is the way to go.
If not, buy a compatible 8 GB Crucial memory chip and replace the 4 GB chip with that one.
Crucial 8GB DDR4-2400 SODIMM | CT8G4SFS824A | Crucial.com
If the report indicates the HP installed a DDR4-2666 MHz memory chip, then get this one instead.
