My laptop is a HP Notebook - 15-bs021nk
Cpu: Intel i5 7200U
- it currently has a 1tb hard drive and I'm looking into the possibility of adding an ssd, I want to confirm that this model does have an m.2 ssd slot and if it is an nvme or just sata3.

Hi:
Yes, your notebook has a M.2 slot that supports SATA M.2 SSD's only, not NVMe.
See chapter 1 of the service manual for the supported drive types:

Thank you for the fast reply, would you kindly suggest a sata ssd that would be good for the money. Also I've seen that the m.2 slot in my laptop is an "m key" one, does that mean any problem for the compatability (does it only take M key ones or even the M&B key SSDs?)

You're very welcome.
All HP notebook and desktop PC's that that I have opened up have M.2 slots that all have just the M key (one key).
A B+M key (two notch) SATA SSD will fit and work in the one key slot just fine.
That is why it is important to read the service manual to see what types of M.2 SSD's are supported.
Some slots support NVMe SSD's only.
Some slots support SATA SSD's only (like the 15-bs model series)
Some slots support both NVMe and SATA SSD's.
I recommend one of the Western Digitial Blue SA510 M.2 SATA SSD's in a storage capacity that meets your needs.
This is the 500 GB model for example.
The most common capacities are 250 GB, 500 GB and 1 TB.
