HP Notebook - 17-bs020nr
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Hello,

Any help would be appreciated.

I just bought an HP 17-BS020NR (1KV30UA#ABA) and would like to upgrade the RAM, DVD to a BDRW and possibly ad an SSD Module which I don't know if that is even an option to add along with the 1TB HDD that is already installed.

I tried the online chat but was able to get no straight answers as to what my machine will accept as far as RAM or anything else goes.

The person that I was speaking with was more concerned with placing an order for a 4GB RAM Module for me rather than allowing me to choose, based on price and available options, what upgrades to possibly make.

I would like to know what upgrades are available for the laptop, any and all upgrades.

Thanks In Advance

Floyd

Manual: http://h10032.www1.hp.com/ctg/Manual/c05963248

Specs: https://support.hp.com/in-en/document/c05530662

Your laptop came with Intel Core 6th gen processor with UMA graphics.

SSD: Your notebook came with 1TB hard drive in the primary bay.

Page 50, 51

There might be a M.2 2280 SATA SSD slot on board. You've to open it up and confirm.

Else your only option is to buy separate M.2 SATA SSD connector board and cable as given in the Manual, to replace HDD bay with M.2 SSD.

RAM: You've single 8gb stick in a slot, second one being empty.

You can upgrade upto 16gb max. Another 8gb stick of exact same configuration, voltage and speed as given in manual and each other.

DVD: You can replace with generic BD-R, BD-RW, re using the caddy and face plate. You're need 9mm type drive like this:

Blu-ray software suite is needed to burn or play Blu-ray movies. Windows 10 has no native Blu-ray support

Hi,

I will try to help with your upgrades.

RAM

Max RAM for the system is 16GB of DDR4 2400Mhz which will run at 2133Mhz (2x8GB). You can buy your preferred brand. On page 48 of service manual you can see the steps to upgrade RAM

http://h10032.www1.hp.com/ctg/Manual/c05963248

SSD

There should be a slot on the motherboard for an M2 Sata3 SSD which you could insert and use as boot drive and keep the 1TB hard drive as data drive. I say should as some HP models which do not come with the M2 SSD installed when bought are missing the physical slot on motherboard. So I would first take a look by removing base enclosure and see if the slot is there. (page 41 of service manual) If you look at the HP videos for your model in link below, click on solid state drive and you can see where slot is:

https://h20574.www2.hp.com/Media/C1D975A7-E124-4B6C-B4FA-D36BE37E1102/gia_PCPFILES/SML/FruVideo/gia_...

If the slot is present you can use an M2 SATA3 drive such as the Samsung 850 evo or other brand.  You will need to install the OS on the SSD for the performance gain. You can use HP recovery disks, migrate an image or perform clean install of Windows by downloading media creation tool from Microsoft, running and creating a bootable drive with the OS on it, then use this drive to install Windows on the SSD. It is best to do with only the SSD in the PC and then when finished replace the mechanical drive in the PC and remove Windows partition.

BluRay

You can remove the DVD drive na replace with Bluray drive. It is kind of plug and play. So remove DVD and remove the front plastic bezel from the drive (it click off) and then place on the new drive. So, what you need is an internal Bluray drive 9mm.

Thank You for all of your advice and time. I contacted Hp via telephone and after some time was told that I do indeed have the ability to add the M.2 2280 Solid State Drive to my machine. I also looked at the spec's and ordered a 2nd 8GB stick of RAM. I will clone the 1TB HDD that came preinstalled in the machine and run the O.S. from the SSD while keeping the 5200 RPM drive for storage. I think that with the SSD and RAM upgrades that this machine will be about as good as it can be. I looked into the BDRW replacement, however, the drives I found were all manufactured in 2013 so I'll wait on that. A possibility of going with an external USB 3.0 BDRW in the future.

I will attempt to accept BOTH of the answers I received but don't know if the site will allow me to.

Either way... BOTH of you were a great help to me.

You are welcome.

Just an FYI - I was able to find a reasonably priced BDRW on Amazon

ASIN B07BF5LY5Z

smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B07BF5LY5Z/ref=oh_aui_detailpage_o03_s00?ie=UTF8&psc=1

The drive works flawlessly and is pretty speedy for what it is.

As for the RAM - I purchased two which were immediately recognized and have had no issues.

Crucial 8GB
Single DDR4 2400 MT/S
(PC4-19200) SR x8
Unbuffered SODIMM 260-Pin Memory
CT8G4SFS824A

Thank you for the great feedback @FloydT3.

Well, I finally got the correct M.2 SSD Hp-Direct and installed it.

I used the Mini-Tool Partition Wizard to clone the drive.

My Off to Full Up & Running went from about two and a half minutes to less than 30 seconds and that includes punching in my password.

WOW

I wish I knew in the beginning that the M.2 SSD that has the two notches, although it fits in the provided connector on the board, would have worked properly since the board's connector seems to be configured for a single notched SSD.

Either way... I'm thrilled now as this laptop is for our up and coming cruise,

Thanks for all of your help.

Very much glad to hear the feedback

Yes even if 1 notch is only present in the M.2 slot, it'll take SATA type with 2 prongs.

Glad you were able to perform the upgrade.

All the best,
