Hi,
I have a 10 year old HP G56-106SA laptop. It is only used as a spare for browsing and email but is really slow even for this. I want to upgrade the cpu. The manual lists a few AMD and Intel cpu's that are compatible. My question is this. Are both AMD and Intel compatible or can i onlu use AMD or Intel depending upon the motherborad I have?
Thanks, Eddie

Hi Eddie,
Only AMD.
Laptop and PC motherboard/system boards and quite platform specific.
If you have an AMD platform you cannot pop in an Intel processor as it won't physically fit and won't be compatible with the chipset either.
Only processors from the list in the image below this line.
None of the processors will give you much in terms of a noticeable performance upgrade. The swap just be worth the hassle.
The rule of thumb is that if you get a bump of 300-400 Mhz in processor bandwidth, then it is worthwhile.
See the Crucial memory offerings of guaranteed compatible SSD upgrades.

take a look at the guaranteed compatible SSD products and search for them online with Google or another search engine to find a great price.

I suggest just upgrading to an SSD. That will give you a really noticeable increase in performance. Your notebook is compatible with 2.5" notebook SATA SSD

Thanks Erico. I was thinking cpu + extra memory + ssd but might go ssd first and see how it goes. Another option would be to replace the motherboard with one which will house a much better cpu - is that sensible do you think?

CPU replacement, considering the compatible processors available isn't, in my opinion, worth the money and hassle.
Unfortunately that motherboard replacement is not a really viable option.
Notebook motherboards are not in any sense of the word, a generic fit, so swapping in a different one is not really a worthwhile option. Sourcing a newer notebook, if you really want a better CPU, is a better option.
Consider upgrading to a certified, reconditioned notebook with a warranty to get more bang for the buck. That is if staying inside the budget is a concern.
